The Slow Food Movement commenced in Australia when Maggie Beer first established a Convivium in South Australia, in the Barossa Valley in 1995.  Subsequently Convivia were established in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth with membership growing solidly.

Australia has 37 Convivia with approximately 2,500 members. Slow Food has experienced significant growth in Australia during the past 5 years. On a per-capita basis Australia is one of the most successful countries for Slow Food memberships in the World.

The principles and policies of Slow Food are gaining increasing acceptance with the general population. The concept of “Good, Clean & Fair” sits perfectly with the increasing demand for sustainability at all levels of society. The key objectives of Slow Food in Australia are:

  • To promote the principles of Good, Clean & Fair
  • To link the pleasure of food with awareness and responsibility
  • To understand the effect of the production of food on our environment & culture
  • To celebrate and support our diverse food traditions
  • To work with food producers to meet these objectives
  • To promote taste education
  • To defend the bio-diversity of the food chain
  • To link producers & consumers
