Book your tickets, then just pack the picnic rug and folding chairs because Slow Food Ballarat presents a roaming lunch in Buninyong's historic Botanical Gardens: wandering, eating and meeting your way through the beautiful grounds while sampling our district's fine produce and wine.

A superb organic vegetable garden will be installed, attendees can meet and purchase from the producers, and even bid for the mobile vegetable plots.

Proceeds go towards the Botanical Garden's revitalisation fund.

Make it a date to come along to the Buninyong Garden Harvest Lunch

buninyong-garden-harvest-lunch-smallIt might be a tall order but members of Slow Food Ballarat led by local chef, Peter Ford are up for the challenge. The group of food and wine enthusiasts will publicly demonstrate its unwavering support for local produce growers by serving-up a mammoth five course lunch to be created from ingredients sourced almost entirely from Buninyong and surrounding Ballarat districts.

The celebration of local growers and producers, dubbed the Buninyong Garden Harvest Lunch, will take place in the Buninyong Botanical Gardens on Sunday 14 March 2010, from 11.30am to 4.00pm.
Attendance is open to all locals and is also being promoted in Melbourne and across Victoria.

This is exactly the sort of brilliant regional food lovers event we should all be supporting - if only for our own selfish greed. We love you, Slow Food Ballarat!

Absolutely terrific to see a focus on regional produce & a steadily increasing interest in slow food by locals. Yay! Sadly, vegetarians are still not catered for at these events. When we are, we feel relegated to the 'kid's table' in terms of the love that goes into a dish & the timing of the plate being brought out (as was experienced at a regional delicious. event, for example).

In future, I'd really like to see some love put into a veg menu that is thoughtful, robust, flavoursome and an equal to the meat options presented, rather than the fresh but largely tasteless fare that I've come across in western Victoria generally. Please take this as a foodie challenge and not a barbed criticism.

I am in full agreement with marnie. Great to see this happening, but why no thought for vegetarians? Choosing not to eat meat does not equate to a lack of interest in excellent flavoursome food! Having been in Ballarat for 5 years, and tried a whole range of dining options in western Victoria, the last absolutely superb meal I ate out was back in my home city Perth.

Hi Jane and Marnie, thanks for the comments.

There are vegetarian options available, and now they are more clearly outlined in the "Fare" - thanks!

I have peeked at the menu and can see that there are very yummy vegetarian choices... the Pizza toppings... a vegetarian Paella... even the sausage stall has a vegetarian option!

And don't forget the luscious-sounding dessert- mmmm blueberries!
